Eleven Broward youngsters strutted their stuff at the Macy’s Back-to-School fashion show on Aug. 21 in Plantation.

They were among 25 models chosen from a field of 1,000. The models were Alexandra Alvarez, Julian Miller and Tony Hunt of Pembroke Pines; Carlos Hernandez of Hollywood; Christina Squitin, Jeffery Hauser, Jessie Neville, Michelle Cabrera and Ryan Hill of Plantation; and Dior Sparkman and Logan Custer of Fort Lauderdale.

The model search/contest was held in May and invited children and young adults ages 4-18 to participate by completing an application with a photograph attached.

— Art work by students from Nova Middle, Davie, is being seen by visitors to South Florida – people from all over the country and the world.

The students’ work is on display at the Alamo Student Art Gallery at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport through Oct. 31.

The contributers to this exhibit are eighth-graders Monica Flatley, Jarret Rosenberg, Jennipher Harter, Mark Phillips, Kris Neuschaefer, Brent Cerrato, Robert Cole, Louise Auerhahn, Jennifer O’Neill, Aaron Fried, Candice Mooyin, Heather McCord, David Schon and Mark Williams; seventh-graders Jennifer Burtz, Amy Klockman, Brian DePass, Daniel Taborda, Rachel Mercado and Sean Ernst; and sixth-graders Eric Laroche, Gregory Bean, Jeffrey Wilen and Daniel Friedman.

The gallery is on the upper level of Terminal 2 and is a permanent art exhibit. It features art work from different Broward County schools every other month.

— Broward Community Foundation an organization that supports the educational needs of Broward residents, announced its scholarship awards for 1993.

Brian Graham, a 1993 graduate of Nova High, has been awarded the Donn Eisele Memorial Scholarship award.

Susan Eisele established this scholarship fund as a way of honoring her husband, the astronaut, by providing assistance to a Broward high school graduate who excels in science and plans to study aeronautics or astronautics in college.

Patrick Lowe and Steven Clark, both 1993 graduates of Dillard High, Fort Lauderdale, each received the Paradies Shop and J.D. Ruffin scholarship.

This scholarship was initiated to provide financial assistance to deserving young people with an emphasis on minority students who are pursuing a business degree.

Holzer Wagner and Jeremy Salsburg, graduates of Fort Lauderdale High, are recipients of the 1993 George B. Davenport Scholarships. Since 1942, two scholarships have been awarded to two young men graduating from Fort Lauderdale high.

— The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation announced that materials for the 1993-94 program are now available.

This merit-based program offers 50 four-year, $20,000 scholarships and 100 four-year, $4,000 scholarships for study at any accredited U.S. college or university. Selection is based on leadership, achievement and commitment, both inside and outside the classroom.

Applications for the Coca-Cola Scholars program may be obtained from each school’s scholarship coordinator.

— South Broward High’s Family Counseling Center invites parents of middle and high school-age students to a parenting class.

The class meets from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 28 at the school, 1901 N. Federal Highway, Hollywood.

The program deals with a number of special challenges faced by parents of teen-agers.

Instruction is free, but participants are required to purchase a book for $15.50 on or before Sept. 28 at South Broward High.

— Pine Crest School, Fort Lauderdale, dedicated the Stacy Family Arts and Activities Center on Saturday, Sept. 18. The new building will include music and art classrooms, an auditorium that can be converted into classrooms and a museum-like apartment where Early American furniture will be on display.

The furniture, the Betsy Benfield Collection of Early American Furniture, was a gift to the school from Jack Benfield, who collected the pieces over a lifetime with his late wife, Betsy.
