A West Palm Beach woman and her two children were killed on Sunday when the airplane in which they were riding crashed in a south Georgia peanut field.

The pilot, Joe Townsend, 38, also of West Palm Beach, was in critical condition late Monday after undergoing surgery at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany, Ga., a nursing supervisor said. The names of the three dead passengers were not known on Monday.

The four-seater plane crashed about 300 yards from the Fitzgerald Municipal Airport runway, authorities said.

The cause of the crash had not been determined. Weather conditions at the time of the crash included heavy rain, gusting winds and a significant drop in temperature, the National Transportation Safety Board said.
