I am slow. Not as hip as I used to be. I can’t keep up with the new artists, especially the rap and hip-hop folks who put out CDs, most of which I don’t want to hear.

But if you haven’t heard Crank That by Soldja Boy, I bet your child has and is likely doing the dance that goes with the song that is played on radio stations that are into the new school recordings.

When I learned there was a song with lyrics that urged people to “Superman that ho,” I wanted to know if my son was familiar. My college students (I teach a journalism course) showed me the video and I was so appalled I could no longer lecture.

“You’re just hearing that, dad?” my son said when I raised the issue of the song. “Yeah, it’s pretty nasty.”

And he went to his room to study.

The lyrics are just down-right, plain, lowdown. nasty. If you want to know the meaning of Superman dat ho” , here’s a link to the urban dictionary and another to the song and dance. .

But let me warn you, while the dance may be innocent, what the lyrics mean is very sexual. And while young children dancing to it don’t know what it means, neither do you, mom and dad.

We’ve got to stay on top of these youngsters’ fads, even if we don’t like it. That song won’t be played in my house even when my college-aged daughter comes home for the break.

Holler back.
