Barbara-Lee Edwards Career
Barbara-Lee grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, and has a Bachelor of Arts in English/History as well as an Associate of Arts in Drama/Music. But it did not take long for her to get hooked on TV news. While studying broadcast journalism at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, she got her first job at an AM radio station in Vancouver.
But television quickly attracted her interest, and she landed her first job in the industry at Vancouver’s Global Television station. In 1994, she began working as an anchor/producer for the Global affiliate in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Curtis, a news and sports photographer, met her there.
She then worked her way up to senior news anchor at a CTV affiliate in Winnipeg, Manitoba, before heading to California and CBS News 8. She has been fighting breast cancer for over a decade, working with Susan G. Komen in San Diego. Her focus on CBS News 8’s “Breast Cancer Can not Stop San Diegans” segments is on educating San Diegans about the importance of early detection and the most recent advances in breast cancer research and treatment.
She has participated in the San Diego 3 Day and served as Team KFMB’s captain for more than ten years as well as been the emcee for the San Diego Race for the Cure. She has been influenced by everyone she has met and every story she has heard. Millions of dollars have been raised as a consequence of her participation in both events for Susan G. Komen, breast cancer patients, and their families, and cure research.
“As a health reporter, it is astounding to learn how many people’s lives have been touched by this disease,” Barbara-Lee says. “As a wife and mother, it is incredible to see how our community has come together, and how much fundraising and research is being done right here in San Diego to treat breast cancer…and eventually find a cure.”
She also likes animals. She supports the Humane Society in its adoption recruitment efforts as the host of CBS News 8’s Pet Friends and the San Diego Humane Society & SPCA Telethon for the Animals. She informs the public about ways to stop animal abuse and neglect.
After nearly 20 years, Barbara-Lee departed her CBS 8 team on October 27, 2021, in order to concentrate on her health. In December 2020, she was diagnosed with subarachnoid hemorrhage, which she describes as equivalent to a stroke or an aneurysm.
She is still recovering from a near-fatal brain bleed in December 2020, which prompted her to resign from her long-standing job as a local TV news presenter. Over the next two to three years, Edwards can probably expect to see some progress, and there already has.
