The Broward School District still officially hasn’t released the number of teachers being put on the dreaded surplus list, a pool of educators vying for full-time positions based on seniority and job availability after being involuntarily transferred.
Surplus has become code for job cut, as schools whittle down their individual budgets by 6 percent in the district’s ongoing battle to close an estimated $130 million shortfall.
But, today (June 1) is the deadline for the district to give teachers written notice that they are being added to the list for the 2010-2011 school year, according to the Broward Teachers Union.
By Friday, the district must inform those who are being laid off and not put on the list.

Here’s what’s happening according to the union:
According to district officials, new positions are coming in every day. That means that a teacher who has already been placed may have a chance to get a school on their list, go back to their school, OR a teacher who remains on surplus list could be placed.
This will be a fluid process and principals will not have a chance to hold positions as has happened in the past. Each time a teacher goes on leave, retires, resigns it is placed into the SAP and district officials are getting daily reports. Those are all positions open to the surplus staff.
Those surplus teachers who have been placed will be notified by the end of school year by letter that they have a position for next year. They will not know where, in case a better placement becomes available.
District officials have said they expect less than 500 layoffs, but this number is subject to change as in the past.
