Myth-busting: It requires a great deal of patience and empathy to work with clients going through family-related legal matters, and there is a great deal of counseling involved on top of the lawyering.

Typical day: Plenty of e-mailing and phone calls with clients, other attorneys and experts; preparation of pleadings; conducting legal research; meeting with clients; preparing for court appearances or mediation.
Career Strategies
What’s new: There’s been a big push for alimony reform; however, the bill has not yet passed.There’s also been a substantial change in 2008 as to children’s issues.The days of “custody” and “primary residential parent,” for example, are gone.
Engagement: Becoming involved in my local bar associations and establishing a good rapport with other attorneys has helped me advance in my practice.I look forward to working toward becoming a board-certified family law attorney next year.
Advice to young professionals: Find a few great and reputable attorneys in your practice area to mentor you and never stop learning.
