IT’S VETERANS DAY…REMEMBER OUR VETERANS…SUPPORT OUR VETERANS…”THANK YOU” TO ALL OUR VETERANS
Dr. Jeffrey Farber, Medical Director and Director of Outpatient Service at Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital affiliated at Delray Medical Center was the second doctor in the “Dr. Is In” series sponsored by the Alliance of Delray to speak at the Vizcaya community Wednesday morning, November 10.
Dr. Farber is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia College/Columbia University and his Medical Degree from New York Medical College he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and speaks fluent Spanish and Hebrew. His areas of expertise are general, neurologic, geriatric and orthopedic rehabilitation; management of chronic pain, gait and balance disorders and electrodiagnostic studies.
“Pain needs to be viewed form a psycho, social, somatic point of view,” said Dr. Farber. He identified the different types of pain such as bone, arthritis, injury, normal muscle ache after exercise, tendinitis, myopathy, nerve injury, neuropathy, stroke or shingles. He then named the various over the counter medications that we all use such as aspirin, Tylenol type compounds and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, and warned that all anti-inflammatories can cause gastro intestinal bleeding in SOME patients. There are new Cox2 type drugs that are much safer, but nothing is perfect.
Physical and occupational therapy can provide exercises to reduce inflammation, restore range of motion, as well as strengthen weakened muscles. Sometimes therapy alone isn’t enough. Patients may need injections and as a last resort—surgery.
He warned that all steroids carry a risk of very rare bone destruction after just a small dose…very unusual, but risk increases with more frequent dosing, usually seen in people on chronic daily dosing or very frequent injections. Neck or cervical injections are always riskier than lumbar or lower back injections.
The Doctor concluded by responding to questions from the audience.
