The Hurricanes pulled off a recruiting coup and secured one of the top cornerbacks in the nation on Thursday.

Five-star cornerback Cormani McClain committed to Miami on Thursday night, picking the Hurricanes over Alabama and Florida.

McClain told 247Sports that he decided Miami would be the pick after discussing it with his mother earlier in the week.

“I just wanted to get this over with,” McClain told the website. “It ain’t no surprise. I just wanted to get it over with. Straight business. I found the school that I want to go to for the next three to four years.”

McClain, a Lakeland native who is listed as the No. 2 player in the 2023 class and the No. 1 cornerback, chose Miami over two dozen other offers.

“Miami … it’s just a cool atmosphere,” McClain said. “I would say it feels like home. Obviously, Miami is a great school, and I can say that they got a dog coming.”

McClain is a star for Lakeland High. This season, he has eight tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception and two pass breakups. At Lake Gibson High last year, McClain had 10 interceptions.

McClain previously visited Miami for an official visit in June and for an unofficial visit in January. He also took an unofficial visit last season.

Miami assistant coaches Jahmile Addae and Josh Gattis attended one of McClain’s games in September. Mario Cristobal also spoke at the Lake Gibson football team’s end-of-year banquet in March.

Hurricanes coaches and staff members quickly took to social media to celebrate McClain’s commitment. Defensive analyst DeMarcus Van Dyke posted a picture holding a gator, while Cristobal posted his usual “#GoCanes” tweet.

McClain joins two other defensive back prospects in Miami’s 2023 class: Melbourne four-star cornerback Robert Stafford and Dillard four-star safety/cornerback Antione Jackson, who announced Wednesday that he had reclassified from the 2024 class to the 2023 class.

McClain is the second five-star recruit in the class, joining IMG Academy offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa. McClain’s commitment bumped the Hurricanes’ class to No. 8 in 247Sports’ rankings.

“Coach Cristobal tells me all the time to come in and help build something that has never been built before,” McClain said. “I think Miami isn’t at the level that it’s supposed to be at, but I think the class of 2023 can bring them back.”
