North: Do you hanker for some fresh-baked goodies? The Delray Bakery in Delray Beach can satisfy your cravings. They have a broad selection of breads, cookies, cakes, pies, cheesecakes, cannolis and even a section devoted to sugar-free treats – and many of them are kosher.

I chose the Apple Cobbler ($3.99 per pound) that had a flaky, buttery bottom crust with crumbs on top. It was chock-full of sliced fresh apples, not too sweet, and with just the right amount of cinnamon. It was packaged in a cardboard pastry box and placed in a plastic bag.

The Delray Bakery (14610 Military Trail, Delray Beach, 561-495-2591) is operated under the supervision of Rabbi Morton Malavsky and is in the Delray Square Plaza just north of Atlantic Avenue on the east side of the trail.

Scrumptious subs

Central: Great Subs & Salads in Lauderdale Lakes is just that – great, if you like subs. I ordered a Great Special 8-inch sub ($5.75) that was prepared before my eyes. In minutes I was out the door.

The made-fresh-daily bread was still warm when I opened the wrapping. The sandwich included thin-sliced turkey and capocollo along with slices of Swiss cheese and pickles. There are also numerous fillings you can request when they are making your sandwich, including chopped lettuce, tomatoes and sweet, mild or hot peppers. You can also ask for the sandwich to be heated.

Great Sub & Salads, 4395 N. State Road 7, 954-714-0990, is in the Oakland Shopping Center on the west side of State Road 7 just north of 41st Street.

Burger discovery

West: I have found a wonderful hamburger place in The Golden Dawn Diner in Tamarac. I stopped one evening to try their Deluxe Pizza Burger ($4.45). I was out the door in minutes.

Once home, I discovered a huge seeded toasted bun with 1/3-pound, well-done (as requested) hamburger patty topped with a spicy tomato and basil sauce and a slice of mozzarella cheese. Lettuce and a slice of tomato were packaged on the side as was a container of fresh coleslaw.

The hamburger was grilled to perfection, the tomato sauce was spicy but not overly hot and did not drown the burger. The garnish was fresh; the slaw creamy, not runny. And the fries – not string fries, but the larger steak fries – were crunchy on the outside, soft inside.

The Golden Dawn Diner (4949 N. State Road 7, 954-735-2102) is on the west side of State Road 7 just south of Commercial Boulevard.
