LAUDERHILL — Citing a history of poor maintenance, neglect and crime at the Lauderhill Mall Club Apartments, the City Council on Monday rejected a proposal to convert the 324-unit complex into public housing.

Owner Jose Milton had hoped to gain council approval to rent the complex, at 1188-94 NW 40th Ave., under the federally financed moderate rehabilitation program. Under the program, a landlord must invest a minimum of $1,000 per unit in improvements.

The proposal also would have required approval from the Broward County Housing Authority.

Several council members expressed concern that crime and maintenance problems would reoccur at the complex if it were converted to public housing.

Milton closed the complex in late August because of drug-related crimes there.

In other action, the council agreed to give Wilton Manors its snorkel truck in exchange for $84,000 and two aging fire trucks. The council will use the two fire trucks and the $84,000 to buy a new rescue truck from Emergency One of Ocala.
