How to unlock Sonic in Smash Ultimate is among the topics fans have wondered since the game's release last week. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features one of the largest and most diverse cast of characters ever seen from the series yet. As a result, many players have been left wondering how they can unlock certain fighters such as Sonic the Hedgehog to add to their list of playable characters. 

Sonic makes his return to the series once again after having first been featured in the Wii's rendition of the game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. ​Instead of being one of the eight initially playable characters, players will need to unlock the hedgehog before choosing him as their fighter.

​After each 10 minutes in the standard versus or Classic Mode, a new challenger will make their appearance. The easiest way to unlock Sonic is through the game’s Classic Mode, where the hedgehog enters as the first challenger if the players pick Mario as their character. Players can play the game on any difficulty they like to make Sonic appear as a challenger. 

Likewise, players can also encounter Sonic through standard battles, but Sonic will only appear as the 17th challenger, so if players want to unlock him quickly, Classic Mode is the best bet. 

When players encounter Sonic as a challenger, they must defeat him to add him to the list of playable characters.
