Miami Dolphins quarterback Mike White entered concussion protocol during Saturday’s 28-3 victory over Houston and remains there today, coach Mike McDaniel said Monday, confirming a South Florida Sun Sentinel report, and White’s condition could put Miami in a difficult situation for this Saturday’s preseason finale at Jacksonville.
Starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and reserve Skylar Thompson are the only healthy quarterbacks on the roster. The Dolphins waived quarterback James Blackman on Aug. 7 and haven’t signed anyone else. McDaniel said they plan to re-sign Blackman, who attended Glades Central High and Florida State University before finishing his collegiate career at Arkansas State. It’s doubtful a brand new quarterback could make a contribution after only a few days of practice.
It’s also doubtful the Dolphins want to play Tagovailoa, who played 15 snaps against Houston, making a tackle on an interception and taking a hit after a pass, against Jacksonville.
And playing Thompson the entire game exposes him to injury, which could cause a difficult situation if White is in concussion protocol for an extended period of time, making him unavailable for the Sept. 10 regular-season opener.
White’s injury capped an interesting four-snap stretch for the Dolphins that featured Thompson leaving the game for a concussion exam, might have featured rookie running back De’Von Achane suffering a shoulder injury, and also saw White taking the hit that likely landed him in concussion protocol.
The hit that likely caused White’s injury was a sack by Houston defensive end Adedayo Odeleye in the third quarter.
It was on second-and-4 from the Dolphins’ 41-yard line.
White tried to evade the pass rush but ended up taking the sack with pressure coming the left side and up the middle.
At the end of the play White was tackled to the ground with his facemask hitting first, and then defensive tackle Byron Cowart, who nearly split the sack with Odeleye, inadvertently put his knee into the top/front of White’s helmet.
White put his hand to his head while he was still on the ground although it’s not clear why.
White finished the series, which meant playing one more snap and handing off to rookie Chris Brooks on third-and-20.
It was an innocent finish to a troubling four-snap stretch that also included one penalty.
Thompson left the game with 10:12 remaining in the third quarter after being hit by defensive end Dylan Horton on a 1-yard pass to Achane. The play was negated due to an illegal contact penalty.
Thompson was under center for the next snap but there was a false start by right tackle Cedric Ogbuehi.
Before Thompson could get under center again he was ushered off the field by referee Bill Vinovoch to have a head examination in the blue medical tent on the sideline. Most likely Thompson required a head examination after his head hit the ground hard on the tackle by Horton.
That’s when White entered the game.
The next play, a 6-yard run up the middle by Achane, featured Achane’s forward progress being stopped by three Texans defenders.
At the end of the play Achane was taken to the ground and landed on his left shoulder. Defensive tackle Khalil Davis, who weighs 308 pounds, landed on top of him.
Achane trotted to the sideline and didn’t return to the game. After the game coach Mike McDaniel said Achane sustained a shoulder injury.
The following snap was an incomplete pass but Houston was offside so the play didn’t count.
White was injured on the next snap.
Thompson and Tagovailoa both made vague references to White’s situation after the game. During the week leading up to the Houston game it was assumed Thompson and White would split time against the Texans after Tagovailoa made the start.
Thompson was asked about that after the game and seemed to make reference to White going through a head examination.
“I knew I was going to play after Tua,” he said. “I didn’t quite know what the situation was going to look like once Mike went through the same deal that I did. So they just informed me that I was playing the rest of the game, so I was happy to get more opportunities there.”
Tagovailoa seemed to use the phrase “unfortunate circumstances” to refer to White after being asked about Thompson’s performance.
“I enjoyed it,” Tagovailoa said. “Three touchdowns? What do you mean? Any which way you call that, that’s awesome. He led those guys, and it was both the twos and the threes, due to some unfortunate circumstances.
“But I’m very happy for him. He got into a groove with the group that he was with, and he balled.”
