What was to be expected after the Miami Hurricanes landed grad transfer kicker Jose Borregales from FIU — and likely before that — has come to fruition.

Bubba Baxa, UM’s kicker the last two seasons, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to 247 Sports. A Hurricanes spokesperson confirmed that Baxa is no longer a member of the football team.

Baxa had a difficult time kicking the ball through the uprights as a sophomore last season. He connected on just five of his 10 field-goal attempts — with three of the misses coming from within 30 yards — and also missed two extra-point tries.

Misses from Baxa proved costly during Miami’s 3-4 start in losses to Florida, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.

Walk-on kicker Camden Price supplanted Baxa for place-kicking duties in the second half of the season. He went 6 for 7 on field goals while making all 18 of his extra points. Baxa also shared kicking duties with another walk-on, Turner Davidson, for two games in the middle of the season while Price was unavailable for unspecified reasons.

With a powerful leg, Baxa remained on kickoff duties, an area where he excelled despite his struggles on place kicks. On 65 kickoffs, he averaged 63.6 yards per kick and recorded 36 touchbacks.

As a freshman in 2018, the Pasadena, Texas, native went 9 of 12 on field goals and 45 of 46 on extra points.

The transfer of Borregales allows the Hurricanes to bridge the gap at kicker before his younger brother, Andres Borregales, gets set to enroll as a committed member of UM’s 2021 recruiting class.

The elder Borregales is FIU’s record holder for points (281) after kicking for the Panthers the past three seasons. The younger brother, who attends Chaminade-Madonna, is the nation’s No. 1 kicking prospect in the 2021 class, according to 247 Sports.

Also on his way out from the program is reserve tight end Brian Polendey, who announced he will be transferring on Twitter on Friday.

“I want to thank my teammates, my coaches, and the entire University of Miami family for an incredible 3 years,” wrote Polenday, who was a redshirt sophomore last season. “I will always be thankful for the relationships I’ve built, and for the opportunity to earn my degree from one of the greatest institutions in the country.

“After much thought, prayer, and discussion with my family, I’ve decided to use my last two years of eligibility and transfer as a grad student. I’m ready to take on a new challenge, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Polendey saw action in six games as a redshirt sophomore in 2019 without making a catch. He made his lone start as a Hurricane in his final game with the team, the Independence Bowl loss on Dec. 26.

In 2018, he redshirted after playing in two games, making one 14-yard catch. As a freshman in 2017, he saw action in six games, largely on special teams.
