Niantic Labs has announced a limited research event in Pokemon GO featuring the water Pokemon, Marill, in association with this season's Luminous Legend's X arc.

This could be a piece of good news for trainers interested in PvP battles in-game. Marill's evolved form, Azumarill, has done well in recent months—ranking decently high in most CP-appropriate League tier lists. The water and fairy-type Pokemon has become a fair foil to several of the scene's most powerful picks. An event featuring Marill would be a good chance to pick up a good candidate for battle.

Pokemon GO Marill Limited Research Guide

The research will take place on Sunday, May 9, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time. Trainers will be able to complete special research tasks during this time that will reward encounters with Marill, itself. While Niantic neglected to explain exactly what these tasks would entail, it did note that they would be both timed and field requests.

Shiny Marill could be make an appearance to a select few lucky individuals.

Traditionally, limited research events such as this offer tasks that focus on the featured Pokemon. For example, trainers may be asked to catch a certain number of one related type or another. They could be required to evolve that Pokemon, having it as their buddy, or even transfer a certain amount to the professor.

For better or worse, however, we won't really know until the event picks up on Sunday. More information can be found on Niantic's Pokemon GO news blog.
