Highly unlikely.
Check in GMail, in Sync, that you have it syncing. And check in Notifications, that you have a notification sound.
(I stopped using GMail as an email app a LONG time ago, because there seems to be something else wrong with every new version. I'm currently using Email, but I'm just not thrilled with the interface.)
