Super Smash Bros. Ultimate welcomes back every playable character in the series so far while introducing a few new faces, leaving many players wondering how they can unlock each of their favorite fighters.

The game starts out with eight playable characters, so players need to unlock the rest of the character pool in order to increase their number of fighters.

Characters join the list of playable fighters after players encounter them as a challenger and defeat them in a 1v1. Playing in the standard versus mode will result in a new challenger appearing every 10 minutes of active playtime. The challengers will always approach in a particular order, so players can figure out which fighters they will unlock and when.

Smash Ultimate Fighter Unlock Order in Classic Mode

Players can also play through the Classic mode to unlock certain characters. The order in which these characters appear will be determined by the initial character chosen when entering into the game.

If a character is unlocked in the Classic mode, they are skipped in the list of unlockable players during the versus mode, and players will encounter the next fighter on the list.
