It was quite heartening for CitySeen to hear from singer Irene Ryder (right) asking us to help publicise Monday and Tuesday's fund-raising concerts at the Cultural Centre for songwriter Terence Choi Kwok-kuen, whose car accident in 2002 left him severely debilitated and in debt because of medical expenses.

Ryder has her own painful history, with acid having been thrown on her face at the height of her career in 1977. The result may have put an end to her stardom, but it hasn't dampened her spirit. The Eurasian veteran is performing again, including regular spots at the Macau Jockey Club. She will be one of the performers at Choi's benefit concerts.

'We don't really know each other very well, but he's always friendly,' Ryder says of Choi. 'When he was popular, I had had my accident so I wasn't on the scene, but I like his songs very much. We just hope he won't give up on himself and will get better. The shows were sold out in just a few days so people have been really supportive.'
