Previously, he worked on Republican political campaigns, including those of former US President George W. Bush, Arizona Senator John McCain as well as California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. In addition, Steve was the advisor and senior campaign strategist to McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008.

Steve argued that he had only learned of the allegations in the previous month and the claim was contradicted by a former Lincoln Project employee. On December 14, 2020, Steve reported in a podcast that he intended to register as a member of the Democratic Party.
