DAR ES SALAAM, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanians in the diaspora remitted a total of 189.13 million U.S. dollars to the east African nation in 2020, a cabinet minister told parliament on Tuesday.

Liberata Mulamula, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, said the remitted amount was recorded by the Bank of Tanzania.

"The Tanzanian diaspora has been playing a major role in contributing to the country's economic development," said the country's top diplomat when she tabled her ministry's budget proposals for the 2021/2022 financial year.

Debating the budget proposals, Members of Parliament advised the government to come up with a policy which will guide on how to engage the diaspora in building the national economy and promoting investments.

The lawmakers said the diaspora played a critical role in supporting sustainable development by transferring resources, knowledge, and ideas back to their home countries, and in integrating their countries of origin into the global economy. Enditem
