Thurl Bailey is a world-renowned American sports journalist, former professional basketball player, film actor, songwriter, musician, and motivational speaker. From 1983 through 1999, he played in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Utah Jazz.

Thurl’s basketball career began at North Carolina State University. He was a key figure in the Wolfpack’s amazing run to the NCAA Championship in 1983. Under Jim Valvano, the Wolfpack’s head coach, he led the team in both rebounding and scoring that year. The Utah Jazz selected Thurl seventh overall in the 1983 NBA draft. According to Utah Jazz management, he was chosen for the quality of his game as well as the quality of his character.
This marked the beginning of his sixteen-year career as a professional basketball player. There were a dozen of them in the National Basketball Association. He was a starter for the Utah Jazz for most of his first two seasons. However, with the pick of Karl Malone, Frank Layden, the coach, made him one of the first possibilities off the bench. As a result, he spent his two best NBA seasons in 1987 and 1988. On November 25, 1991, he was dealt by the Jazz to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Tyrone Corbin and a 1992 second-round draft pick.
He spent nearly three seasons in Minnesota before leaving the National Basketball Association in 1994. He played in the Greek League with Panionios in 1994-1995. Thurl played for Polti Cantù in the Italian League from 1995 until 1998. He subsequently played for Stefanel Milano from 1997 to 1998 before rejoining the Jazz as a free agent on January 21, 1999. Thurl retired at the end of the 1998-1999 season.
