Several of the country’s top 3-year-olds, including the first four finishers of the Florida Derby, will put in their final prep races today for the May 4 Kentucky Derby.

In New York, Florida Derby winner Unbridled’s Song will be heavily favored to beat five others in the $500,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. Meanwhile, in Kentucky, Editor’s Note, Skip Away and Louis Quatorze, the second-, thirdand fourth-place finishers, respectively, in the Florida Derby, will go to post in the $700,000 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

Both races will be simulcast this afternoon at Hialeah Park, where Fred Hooper’s classy 4-year-old filly Class Kris will seek her fourth consecutive graded-stakes victory in the $200,000 Black Helen Handicap.

With a victory in the Wood, Unbridled’s Song could roll into Chruchill Downs the overwhelming favorite to win the 122nd Kentucky Derby. Trained by Jim Ryerson and ridden by Mike Smith, Unbridled’s Song seeks to become the first Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner to win the Kentucky Derby. His competition in the Wood includes Gotham winner Romano Gucci, Palm Beach Stakes winner Harrowman and Buckland Farm’s Feather Box, trained by Angel Cordero Jr.

The Blue Grass features a wide-open field of seven including two horses trained by Nick Zito: Louis Quatorze and Diligence. Louis Quatorze won twice against allowance company before finishing fourth in the Florida Derby. Diligence, owned by New York Yankees boss George Steinbrenner, also won two allowance races at Gulfstream before winning the Unbridled Stakes on Florida Derby Day over Draw, who also is entered in the Blue Grass.

Skip Away, trained by veteran Sonny Hine, and Editor’s Note, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, haven’t raced since the March 16 Florida Derby. Shipping in from California for the Blue Grass is Semoran, who won the Remington Park Derby last time out. Semoran is trained by Bob Baffert, who won the $1 million Santa Anita Derby with Cavonnier.

The $500,000 Arkansas Derby, which will not be simulcast at Hialeah, will provide the final piece to Lukas’ Derby puzzle. Grindstone, who won the Louisiana Derby under Jerry Bailey, has gained prominence in Lukas’ stable since the poor performances by Honour and Glory and Prince of Thieves in the Santa Anita Derby a week ago. Grindstone is the 9-5 favorite in the field of 12.

After the simulcasts of the Wood and Blue Grass, Class Kris will go to post in the Black Helen. The filly, to be ridden by Gary Boulanger, enters the 1 1/8-mile event off victories in Hialeah’s Breeders’ Cup Handicap and Gulfstream’s Buckram Oak and Suwannee River handicaps. She’ll carry highweight of 121 pounds.

Class Kris’ main opposition will come from Very One Handicap winner Electric Society, who finished fourth in Gulfstream’s Orchid Handicap last time out, and Pin Oak Stable’s Look Daggers. Trained by Bill Mott, Look Daggers will be making his first start since winning the Rutgers Breeders’ Cup against the boys in October. Ramon Perez will ride.
