Q.The movie Ghost featured Unchained Melody as its theme. I remember in the 1950s it was sung by Al Hibbler. Am I correct?

I am trying to convince my friends, who think this song was only performed by the Righteous Brothers. — Phyllis Polikoff, Plantation

A.Unchained Melody was written in 1955 by Hy Zaret (words) and Alex North (music). It was the same song in the 1955 movie Unchained, starring Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch, Barbara Hale, Chester Morris and Johnny Johnston.

A leading instrumental recording of this song was by Les Baxter and his orchestra; a leading vocal by Hibbler was arranged and conducted by Jack Pleis. In 1965, it was revived by the Righteous Brothers.

Q.Have you heard of a song written many years ago called Cement Mixer? My grandson kept asking me to sing it every night to him. I would like to know where I could buy it. — Louise Matos, Massapequa Park, N.Y.

A.Cement Mixer Mixer (Put-Ti, Put-Ti) was written in 1946 by Slim Gaillard and Lee Ricks. Gaillard recorded it with his Slim Gaillard Trio and it was a big hit. You can get his original recording (78 rpm) or on cassette tape at Records Revisited, 34 W. 33rd St., New York, NY 10001, 212-695-7155.
