A woman foiled a Delray Beach man’s plan to sell her the paddleboards he stole from her on Craigslist after she posed as a potential buyer and called the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, according to an arrest report.
The man, Jonathan Cullen, 27, is charged with theft and dealing in stolen property.
Deputies said on Sunday a woman came to a Sheriff’s Office station about a report she had filed last week regarding her stolen paddleboards worth $3,800.
The woman said someone had stolen two paddleboards from the top of her car. And as she was looking on Craigslist, she spotted someone selling paddleboards identical to hers for $700.
She contacted the seller, later identified as Cullen, asked about the paddleboards and for descriptions of them. When she figured out they were hers, deputies said, she told the man she would arrange a meet-up to buy them from him.
But before the two agreed on the sale, she called deputies and asked them to come along.
On Monday, the woman and Cullen picked a place to meet in Boynton Beach. One of the paddleboards was sticking out of the back of Cullen’s SUV. When he got out of his vehicle, deputies met him.
Cullen told deputies he was drunk the night he stole the paddle boards, according to the report. He saw the paddleboards strapped onto the top of an SUV, and the next thing he knew, he woke up in the morning with two paddleboards in his house.
He decided to put them on Craiglist because he wanted to get rid of them and admitted that it was a stupid mistake, according to the arrest report.
He is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail on $10,000 bail.
